At Snettisham Primary School we promote an inclusive ethos where everyone in our community feels they can belong. We have high expectations for all of our students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and seek to ensure that they fulfil their potential and fully participate in education, enrichment, developing social and emotional skills and enjoyment.

As part of our Inclusion Strategy and Accessibility Plan, early identification of special needs and disabilities (SEND) helps children get the right support early to improve long-term learning, social, and emotional outcomes. So, in partnership with families, we look at the barriers that can affect belonging, attainment, participation and enrichment. We take a graduated response to supporting needs, using ongoing training from research-based providers such as the Educational Endowment Foundation and in partnership with Norfolk County Council, to embed a culture and ethos of inclusion and equity in our school. We focus on embedding our adaptive teaching using scaffolding, differentiation, oracy, repetition and vocabulary to build a consistent universal offer.

We are an inclusive school and celebrate our targeted and targeted support for individual needs and specialist provision. We use the graduated approach, working with families and outside professionals, targeting intervention when it is needed, which helps children become independent, confident and learn well. Pupils say they are happy, well included and make great progress, sometimes in smaller steps.

Through our inclusive admissions policy, we make sure that all children can be admitted to our school if it is your chosen preference. We also use our Pupil Premium Funding and Inclusion Funding to support all children with quality training and intervention.

Our Approach to SEND

We believe in participation for all - inclusion. Early identification of special needs and disabilities (SEND) helps children get the right support early to improve long-term learning, social, and emotional outcomes.
We value high quality universal teaching for all learners and use continuous professional development to establish highly adaptive teaching and learning in the school. We focus on support across Speech and Language, Executive Functioning, Sensory Development, Motor Development and Social and Emotional Development.

We aim to create a learning environment which is flexible enough to meet the needs of all members of our school community. We monitor the progress of all learners, and staff continually assess, ensuring that learning is taking place. Our whole school system for monitoring progress includes regular pupil progress meetings alongside staff engagement in coaching and supervision.
In partnership with West Norfolk Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) we promote wellbeing and positive mental health. We use a whole-school approach to ensure pupils have the schools they need to be resilient, self-regulate and develop positive self-esteem.

How we Identify SEND

We identify needs through analysis and assessment of the whole child – gathering support from families and experts at hand. At different times in their school career, a young child or young person may have an emerging need that can be addressed through timely, targeted support.

The Code of Practice identifies SEN as:

“A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability, which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

Have a significantly greater difficulty learning than the majority of others of the same age: or
Have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.”

If a learner is identified as having SEN, we will provide a graduated response that is ‘additional to or different from’ the normal differentiated curriculum, intended to overcome the barrier to their learning.

We involve parents/carers every step of the way, and we hope that through working together, we can ensure your child leaves this school with positive experiences.
